Today I’m going to share books that I meant to read in 2017 but didn’t get to for one reason or another. #oops Of course I totallyyyy plan to get to them in 2018!! WHY did I pick these 12? Come find out… PLUS, they ALL appear on my moody reading challenge list, so check it out if you missed it last week!!
by Ashley Poston. I became interested in the glut of retellings on the market in 2017. So many were hyped and I hadn’t read any of them. This is one that I saw ALL over the place. My blogger friend Haley @ Fangirl Fury highly suggested it!
“-Elle, we might not know much about each other, and I might not be there, and you might not be here, but I’m glad I share this sky with you.
-Maybe we should start looking up together, ah’blena”
by Becky Chambers. I was really amped to read this but slowly lost the excitement as the year passed. On goodreads I can’t believe how many LOVE IT!! It’s totally character driven sci-fi and diverse with lots of relationships! I don’t know why I lost interest so I’m giving it a go in 2018!
“Ninety percent of all problems are caused by people being assholes.”
“What causes the other ten percent?” asked Kizzy.
“Natural disasters,” said Nib.”
by Jessica Khoury. Aladdin retelling! I love shape-shifting magic and am excited to see what everything loves about this book. Zahra redeems what it means to be in love… YAY!
“There is only one thing more numerous than the stars,” I say, looking up to the heavens. “And that is the darkness that holds them.”
by Erin Morgenstern. I was rather clueless about magical realism when I first heard about this book. Now that I see that term being tossed around more and more I’ve become super excited to see if the hype is worth it!
“You may tell a tale that takes up residence in someone’s soul, becomes their blood and self and purpose. That tale will move them and drive them and who knows that they might do because of it, because of your words. That is your role, your gift.”
by F.C. Yee. Based on Chinese folklore I first saw this book as a book tour offering. When the reviews started to roll in I kicked myself for NOT reading it. I LOVE Asian culture and was obviously having an off day when I deleted that email!
“This is bull crap!” I shouted. “I’m tired! I don’t have the energy for this!”
“Genie,” Quentin said. “Please stop telling the swarm of yaoguai how weak you are right now.”
“I don’t want to deal with you!” I hollered at the demons from afar. “Screw everything! Evil wins, are you happy?”
by Akemi Dawn Bowman. As someone who is a quarter Japanese I LOVE reading about those who have a similar family background as myself! And mental health too!! I simply lost track of this book but am excited to read it now…
“Beauty isn’t a single thing. Beauty is dreaming一it’s different for everyone, and there are so many versions of it that you mostly have no control over how you see it”
by Louise Gornall. OCD is a mental illness I LOVE to read about it as I have the lesser form of it. AND I’ve not read about agoraphobia so I love that this is an #OWNvoices story!!
“Beauty comes from how you treat people and how you behave. But if a little lipstick makes you smile, then you should wear it and forget what anyone else thinks.”
by Susan Dennard. This series is a long running series (6 slated books) so I feel like I have time but it’s also said to have some incredible magic and fighting, which is hot, hot, hot for me. I want to be MORE than ready to get an ARC for book 3 at the end of the year!!
“I hate this. Both the storm and the plan. Why does it have to be ‘we’? Why not just me?”
“Because ‘just me’ isn’t who we are,” Iseult hollered back. “I’ll always follow you, Safi, and you’ll always follow me. Threadsisters to the end.”
by Catherine Fisher. Sometimes I wonder if I’ve built this dystopia up too big in my mind. I first heart about it in 2012 and have it lingering on my mind but never get to it… It is literally my most anticipated and oldest book on my to-read shelf. This is the year I finally read it!
“The world is a chessboard, Madam, on which we play out our ploys and follies. You are the Queen, of course. Your moves are the strongest. For myself, I claim only to be a knight, advancing in a crooked progress. Do we move ourselves, do you think, or does a great gloved hand place on our squares.”
by Jay Kristoff. Before the Nevernight series there was The Lotus Wars for YA! I LOVE books with creatures (especially one like dragons and griffons) so I have been trying to get to this book all year, finally I’m going to just do it! (Before I jump into his adult series!)
“Dying is easy. Anyone can throw themselves onto the pyre and rest a happy martyr. Enduring the suffering that comes with sacrifice is the real test.”
Why do you anticipate a book? Author, premise, tropes?
I have my favorite genres that I will look into a book if it falls in it. The premise has to really kill it though. I want to be intrigued and feel an urge to read more. Authors are great and I will take notice of them but only as the quality. Do the quotes intrigue you?!
Thanks for Reading XOXO
