Over the years I’ve had many recommendations for manga series and have been quick to add them to my TBR… my library though has not been swift to purchase these series so that I may read them (my go to source for manga)… I did pretty good today, letting go of some series I’m not interested in enough to purchase…
Regularly I’m going to hit up my TBR shelf and pick off six books that have been there the longest and examine the pros and cons to keeping them or skipping them. My first aim is to cut my TBR shelf down by a third. My second aim is to sort those I keep into three piles: read soon, “keep” or someday. Did I make the right choice?
Bride of the Water God, Vol.1 by Mi-Kyung Yun
When Soah’s desperate village sacrifices her to the Water God Habaek to end a long drought, they believe she will bring much-needed rain. Not only is she rescued by the Water God, she’s a welcomed guest in his magical kingdom!
I haven’t read this yet but now is the time with an adaption into a k-drama!! I watched the first 2 episodes and it is so cute how arrogant this guy is, so I hope the manga is just as compelling… the k-drama is set in modern times and this is in ancient times, so there will be differences. I put volumes 1 and 2 on hold at my library and am excited to see they have the whole series!
Rage Within by Jeyn Roberts
Four have survived the world that turned most of the population into murderous Baggers. In book 2 of the Dark Inside series they hide in an abandoned house in Vancouver. Aries trying to lead; Clementine to find her brother Heath; Michael to deal with his past actions; Mason worrying he may be a danger to everyone.
Post apocalyptic is totally my genre but I remember book one distinctly and it wasn’t good. The main problem was the multi-POVs were not distinguishable from one another.
Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta
Finnikin is summoned to meet Evanjalin, a young woman with an incredible claim: his best friend and heir to the throne of Lumatere, Prince Balthazar, is alive. As he travels with this girl he starts to believe his cursed people will be reunited with those trapped in Lumatere… including his imprisoned father.
I’m not sure why I put this book on my TBR… I read a couple reviews one positive and one negative. They both work really well together to give me a sense of the book. The girl is manipulative but that’s okay because she’s fierce… I don’t know about that. There’s more but nothing about this world is pulling me in…
A spinoff of the xxxHolic manga series, Sakura has a mysterious and misunderstood power. Syaoran is the leader of the archaeological dig that took her father’s life. When a puzzling symbol is uncovered it triggers the scattering of Sakura’s memories. Syaoran sets out on a quest through other worlds to collect them.
I have tons of CLAMP manga series to try having see several of them as anime. They tend to be odd and out there, this doesn’t sound that different. I’m not a huge fan of the art style (in fact I’m more and more turned off by it) nor is the premise capturing me…
xxxHolic, Vol. 1 by CLAMP
Watanuki is haunted by visions of ghosts and spirits when by chance he encounters a witch, Yuuko, who claims she can help. Tricked into working to pay off the debt for her services he works in her little shop doing work that is nothing like he imagined.
I’ve seen the anime so it would be cool to read the manga version. I don’t read much from the genre aimed at seinen so it would be nice to see how this turns out. It was quite an odd anime and we stuck with it simply because it was odd and creepy…
Saiyuki Reload, Vol.1 by Kazuya Minekura
The sequel to the Saiyuki series, making an almost complete reversal on perspective of the youkai/demons driven to madness and murder. Where Gensomaden Saiyuki (the main series) sets up the world and the characters, RELOAD delves into the other side of the story: the youkai who have not gone mad, surviving in a world of human distrust and want for revenge.
I have watched the anime of the original Saiyuki manga and LOVED it! It love Sanzo and his group and would love to read more… but I haven’t read the first series yet… Having this on my TBR is like have the final book in a series to read yet having not even picked the series up yet…
Please weigh in on how you feel about the books above… Did I cut a favorite of yours? Did I keep a stinker? Is there a book I must read ASAP? Let’s chat… I value your comments!
