The Others series by Anne Bishop
No one creates realms like New York Times bestselling author Anne Bishop. Now in a thrilling new fantasy series, enter a world inhabited by the Others, unearthly entities—vampires and shape-shifters among them—who rule the Earth and whose prey are humans.
As a cassandra sangue, or blood prophet, Meg Corbyn can see the future when her skin is cut—a gift that feels more like a curse. Meg’s Controller keeps her enslaved so he can have full access to her visions. But when she escapes, the only safe place Meg can hide is at the Lakeside Courtyard—a business district operated by the Others.
Shape-shifter Simon Wolfgard is reluctant to hire the stranger who inquires about the Human Liaison job. First, he senses she’s keeping a secret, and second, she doesn’t smell like human prey. Yet a stronger instinct propels him to give Meg the job. And when he learns the truth about Meg and that she’s wanted by the government, he’ll have to decide if she’s worth the fight between humans and the Others that will surely follow.
Wait and here my argument, please… If you picked up the Twilight series AT ALL, EVER more than likely you were a fan of paranormal beings like vampires and werewolves. You may have really liked it in its heyday but now realize from all your reading that the writing was not the best. It doesn’t change that essential reason you first fell for the world of Twilight…
The Others is the grown up version of Twilight without any of the things that irritate you now. No love triangles. No focus on the angst, instead all about the world. Anne Bishop uses the classic vampire and werewolf world but in a totally creative way that will make you marvel that such a stereotype can be reimagined. You’ve never seen vampires like this… Plus there are more paranormal beings like elementals and a medusa plus an amped up elder version in later books. And you’ll fall for the different shifters all over again!
And the heroine Meg is a woman to root for. At first glance she is a bit of a Mary Sue (just like Bella) but after a lifetime locked in a room she is out on her own and she won’t give up. Her time spent in the Courtyard changes the Others and disturbs their philosophy. There are so many other reasons to give this series a try… but I won’t ruin it for you… go out and get it now!
I hope I convinced you to give The Other series a try in my first If&Then Thursday. I know I didn’t use the meme exactly how it’s supposed to be done (my understanding is your supposed to LIKE the A book…*shrug*) but it was the best comparison.
Thanks for reading, XOXO
