Book Traveling Thursday: Red Original Cover

Book Traveling Thursday is a weekly meme hosted by Danielle @ Danielle’s Book Blog and Catia @ The Girl Who Read Too Much, where you pick a book based on the theme of the week and post the original cover, your country’s cover, your favorite cover, and your least favorite cover. Feel free to join in! Check out the group Book Traveling Thursday on Goodreads for the weekly topics…

Book Traveling ThursdaysThis week’s topic is to choose a book that has originally a red cover. I think it’s so funny that so far my favorite Book Traveling Thursdays have been the original color ones. It’s fun to look back on the covers of books I’ve read and just randomly pick one because it has the right look! I knew right off the book I was going to choose having run across it writing another meme…

His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik

Add to GoodreadsThe Temeraire series follows Captain Will Laurence in an alternate history during the Napoleonic Wars where dragons riders sweep into battle with the little dictator. I love books that take a dragon from egg to bonding with a dragon rider. Temeraire will win your heart and make it pound as he and Laurence fly into aerial battles. The dragon is the best part as you learn all about history with a re-imagined flying unit.

The original cover was one of these three. The middle one is the one I have and I suspect since it was published first the original for English. The other two were from other publishers and were released later under the name of the series, Temeraire. I was drawn to the original cover so I quite like it.

His Majestys Dragon Korean cover His Majestys Dragon German cover His Majestys Dragon Czech cover

The worst covers were the Korean, German and Czech covers. I had to include the Korean because, come on, it’s Korean! Too much text though… The German is quite interesting in that the dragon is very subliminal and reserved. And why bright blue? It is just totally off. The Czech cover is a classic fantasy dragon cover and the ship is sort of right… it’s not really sucking me in though. It doesn’t match the feel of the book…

His Majestys Dragon Portuguese cover

The best cover to me was kind of the Portuguese cover…? I do wish it were more a modern take on an old style cover but this feels like it came from the Napoleon time period and it’s just representational so there is no expectation that the description should match the cover. Maybe brighter colors to make it feel like something we found in modern times but which we wanted to feel it had history… does that make sense? I liked the original cover but there is something special about this one!

Do you enjoy the alternate history genre? Have you read this book? What is your favorite book with a dragon?

Thanks for reading, XOXO
