Top 5 Wednesday: Books as Event Themes

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme created by Samantha and Lainey. Feel free to join in! Check out the group Top 5 Wednesday on Goodreads for the weekly topics…

Top 5 Wednesday Header

This week’s topic is Books as Event Themes. It’s party season, whether that is high school prom, weddings, or summer holiday events. What books would make a good party/event theme?? I loved this idea… and really wanted to pick some unusual books for this one but I also had a couple that were obvious choices! I didn’t assign them to any particular type of party… who needs a reason to have a party anyway!?

#5 – Pure

Pure coverSet in a post-apocalyptic future, there have been fusings of objects into the people around them after a massive explosion of power ripped apart the world. The protagonist, Pressia was merged with a plastic doll head, and her grandfather a fan merged into his throat. It also happened with animals, bugs, the ground and buildings! There is so much crazy stuff you can do with this for a party! You could even “fuse” foods together… okay maybe not that, but people could get really creative with costumes, decorations and photo spots! And for those who don’t want to do crazy they can be one of the “pure” who were not outside when all hell broke loose…

#4 – Seraphina

Seraphina cover“Folding themselves into human shape, dragons attend court as ambassadors, and lend their rational, mathematical minds to universities as scholars and teachers. Set in an alternative-medieval world of warring humans and dragons we can go old school costumes. With princes and princesses, half dragons and the Queen’s Guard there is a full range to choose from besides the more common place scholars and resistance. The best thing though is the orchestra and the gifted performances by the best singers! Seraphina is one of the best musicians due to her half-dragon heritage so the music will entrance the most jaded of hearts…

#3 – The Edge of Everything

the-edge-of-everything-coverSet in a hell called the Lowlands, X is a mysterious bounty hunter who pulls souls down that need taking. He isn’t the only one sent to the surface to collect those that have committed the ultimate crime there are many from the whole span of time. They take from the weak sent to them so there is no reason to stay true but mixing and mismatching is definitely preferred. They even forget what the surface was like which results in the most unusual of tattoos. Dress can be culled from the guests most favorite of time periods! And because candy and sweets are forbidden banquet tables can be filled with every imaginable treat…

#2 – Daughter of Smoke & Bone

Daughter of Smoke and Bone CoverI know this book makes it onto my lists frequently. I find Laini Taylor’s world one of the most creative even if book one was the best. The chimaera would make freaking awesome costumes with their multiple animal makeup and for those that prefer the ethereal to the more earthy animals they can come as an angelic visitor. But even if you put costumes to the side with this one there is still the teeth and burned handprints that can be used as decorations. There can be a booth to apply crazy hair colors and then get your picture drawn. And puppet performers can put on a show! And for a special treat the little cakes that Karou‘s best friend, Zuzana, loves so much…

#1 – The Bone Witch

The Bone Witch coverFor the more sedate party goer we have a more “realistic” theme with beautiful and elaborate hua and exquisite jewelry both for the neck and to adorn a pile of hair on top of the head. Every woman can be escorted by a military man where their mood ring necklaces can display how well their dates are going. Asha, trained in the arts and battle can put on weapon and fighting shows as well as dances and plays. Conversations on a range of topics can be held with intelligent companions. The food can be exotic fare by the best chefs the like of dizi and ghormeh sabzi such as was made by Lady Althy. Fireworks, much beloved by Asians can put a lovely cap on the evening.

Seriously I wasn’t thinking of Halloween when I made these choices but I definitely need a professional costumer to carry off any of these party ideas… What about you? Have you read any of these books? Do you want to go to a party with any of these themes? Please leave a link to your post this week and I’ll check it out!

  1. Interesting prompt! A Pure-themed party sounds a little crazy, but also awesome!

I haven’t read Seraphina yet, but it’s on my list!

I’ve thrown some Harry Potter-themed parties, but that’s it for themed events for me. I’d love to do an Anne of Green Gables party, though.

Let's talk in the comments...
